Mothophilia: More than 20 reasons to love moths!

Join us for an 801nce/Month Nerd Night and learn more than you ever thought you could ever know about moths!

Moths are some of the most compelling and misunderstood insects on Earth. With more than 160,000 known species worldwide, they come in a bewildering variety of colors, shapes, and sizes — from micro-moths smaller than a pinhead to giant silk moths with wingspans wider than your hand. While often overshadowed by butterflies, moths play a vital role as pollinators, as food sources for birds, bats, and wildlife, and as indicators of healthy, native ecosystems.

Bay Area ecologist Allen Fish is back for another fascinating Nerd Night focusing on the remarkable adaptations, behaviors, and mysteries that make moths truly extraordinary. Allen’s knowledge and passion for these overlooked beauties, along with his captivating storytelling, will have you laughing, ooh-ing and aw-ing and learning more than you thought you’d ever know about moths!

The evening will end with a short walk to Piedmont Park where we will examine our very own neighborhood moths and you get to apply what you’ve just learned!
