DESCRIPTION:The teachers of PUSD invite our community — students\, school staff\, parents\, and neighbors — to join us Friday morning\, April 4\, to show our support for the work of the federal Department of Education\, which is in imminent danger of being dismantled. \nWe’ll be gathering in Piedmont Park near the vase at 8 a.m. (or for Beach and Wildwood folks\, outside their school sites). We’ll be wearing Red for Ed\, and invite everyone to wear red\, bring signs supporting public education\, and stand in solidarity with us before we walk together to our school sites ten minutes before the first bell of the day rings. \nThe Department of Education gives crucial support to American students — including those with disabilities\, English Learners\, children who face racial and gender discrimination\, and children who live in poverty — with programs including IDEA\, Title I\, Title IX\, financial support for college through FAFSA\, and much more. \nLet’s stand together to support all U.S. students and U.S. public schools!

This year’s event will begin at 6 p.m. to better accommodate young attendees. \nLights Up Piedmont!\nWednesday\, Dec. 4\, 6 p.m.\nPiedmont Community Hall\, 711 Highland Avenue \nJoin us for:\n• Food and drink: Piedmont Boy Scouts will be serving hot cider donated by Piedmont Grocery and hot cocoa courtesy of Heafey-Baum Group. Recreation Department staff will be serving hot latkes donated by Chabad Jewish Center.\n• Seasonal activities: Enjoy light-themed crafts and games in the courtyard hosted by Piedmont Girl Scouts and the Piedmont Recreation Department. Attendees can write letters to Santa and pose for photos with Santa inside Community Hall.\n• Music\, memories\, and illumination: The program will begin at 6 p.m.\, emceed by Piedmont Beautification President Patty Dunlap. Following a performance from the Piedmont High School Troubadours and remarks from Mayor Jen Cavenaugh\, a Make-A-Wish foundation recipient will flip the switch to light up the 80 foot Redwood\, menorah\, Piedmont Park\, and Community Hall. \nEach attendee will receive an electric candle so they can join the moment and light up Piedmont together as a community. \nNow in its third year under this name\, Lights Up Piedmont! expands and evolves Piedmont’s beloved holiday tree lighting ceremony\, which dates back to 1969\, broadening the event to reflect the light-centered celebrations enjoyed by cultures across the globe in the depths of winter. \nLights Up! will take place rain or shine. \nLights Up! made possible through partnership with Piedmont Beautification Foundation \nThe Piedmont Beautification Foundation (PBF) obtains\, maintains\, installs\, and removes the colorful LED lights that adorn the illuminated tree each year. Run to win or walk to enjoy the brisk morning air and good cheer. And all those finishing the 5K course will have bragging rights at their Thanksgiving table that evening! The Piedmont Turkey Trot is a nonprofit organization supporting local charities and organizations. \nThe Piedmont Turkey Trot is proud to have net proceeds benefit the PHS Cross Country and Track and Field Teams.
