What is Fund Education Now Week?

From February 3-7, PUSD and the East Bay Coalition for Public Education ask you to join our advocacy efforts and learn more about the funding issues facing our school and schools all across California. We are asking students, parents, teachers, staff, and the community to reach out this week to our state legislators to advocate for increased funding for our schools.

Why is this important?

  • Funding for California public schools has been insufficient for decades. Piedmont tries to “fill the gap” with our Parcel Taxes and Giving Campaign funding, but that is not a sustainable formula.
  • Some funding has been restored recently under the Local Control Funding Formula, but not enough. Piedmont receives significantly less in LCFF funding than surrounding schools.
  • California ranks among the bottom ten states in annual per-pupil spending.
  • When the state fails to invest in public schools, students suffer. Art and music programs disappear. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is pared back to the minimum levels required under law.
  • Like districts across the country, the lack of funding contributes to the struggle to recruit and retain teachers with salaries that do not cover the costs of living in the area.

What will help?

Pass AB 39: AB 39 directs growth in the Proposition 98 guarantee to increase LCFF target base grant amounts starting in the 2020-21 fiscal year.

Fund AB 39 Through the State Budget

  • To fully fund AB 39, the state must pass a budget that allocates additional funding to public schools this year, and in the next several years.
  • Support lawmakers who commit to funding AB 39 in the state budget.
